How do you stay in touch and also leverage your network? All the contacts you have gathered, the many WhatsApp groups you belong to, the LinkedIn connections you have garnered?

The skill of networking does not lie in gathering phone numbers, or saying hi to people at events. It lies in growing, maintaining and leveraging those relationships.

How?

Here are 4 strategies:

1. Constantly add value to your network. 

This could be to 1 person at a time or even to a whole group of people. This could take several forms

a. Connect people

You know someone who’s looking for a tax consultant and you know a tax consultant, don’t hesitate to connect the two.

b. Share information and inspiration

Liked a podcast episode? Share it in a WhatsApp group. Liked an article? Share the link in a LinkedIn post. Know of an event that would be of interest to someone? Tell them about it.

Do this constantly till it comes naturally to you. Give. Give. Give.

2. Look for interesting collaborations within your network.

Can you co author an article, social media content or even a book with someone?

Can you pitch to a new client together?

Can you host a webinar together?

1 + 1 is always equal to 11 and not 2. Leverage your network for interesting collaborations that are a win win for all parties.

3. Seek inspiration and learning from your network.

The best learning comes from people and their experiences.

Set aside time every week to connect with any 2-3 members from your network and talk to them about their work and life. Ig nothing else it will be a great conversation.

4. Ask for what you need.

While it is important to give, don’t hesitate to ask from your network too. Need a phone number from someone, ask. Need some information or help from a community, ask.
